The University of Nizwa IEEE student branch participates in IEEEXtreme contest.

The University of Nizwa IEEE student branch has participated in the IEEEXtreme 24-Hour Programming Competition on 26^th of October 2013 IEEEXtreme is a global challenge in which teams of IEEE Student members, supported by an IEEE Student Branch and proctored by an IEEE member, compete against each other to solve a set of programming challenging problems within 24-hour time span.

The University of Nizwa IEEE student branch participates in IEEEXtreme contest.

This is the seventh year of the contest where over 2,300 teams have registered from all around the world. We are the only Omani team that participated in this contest. The team was formed by three IEEE student members namely Hamed Al-Salmi, Ishaq Al-Zidi and Mohammed Al-Salmi.

The proctor was Dr. Alaa Aljanabi the head of the computer science section - college of arts and sciences. The counselor of the University of Nizwa IEEE Student Branch Ms. Solane Duque has also attended the contest.Each participating team can use any programing language to solve the problem like C, C++, Java, or PHP. The contest was composed of 22 challenging problems delivered through an online system that read and compile the code and run it through a set of test cases. The online system is then grants the appropriate score according to the number test cases passed correctly.

Our team has got around 800 points. The team placed 310 (out of 2300) in the unofficial leaderboard. The official points and places will be announced on 5^th of November. Dr. Alaa the proctor said it is a new experience for the students since it is the first participation in this type of world contests. He added that the computer science section will continue to encourage the students to participate in these kinds of events and offer them the necessary training and support. Ms. Solane the University of Nizwa IEEE student branch counselor said it is great to participate in such world contest.

She also mentioned that in addition to the participation in such events, the IEEE student branch at University of Nizwa will organize a local programming competition in the near future.

"It was a new experience for me. I have learned new things. The problems were challenging. I think we did very well in this contest compared to other teams." Hamed said. "My participation in the contest added much to my knowledge. I am planning to participate in the next contest and I will prepare for it from now" Ishaq said. "The contest help me enhance my level in solving problems. I learnt new ways and technique. I advise all students to participate in such contest" Mohammed Said.
