Pre-foundation and Pre-foundation Consolidation Course Outline

A student-centered intensive English course designed to help students with limited proficiency in English to develop oral fluency and accuracy through speaking and listening, to develop and practice reading skills and expand vocabulary, to write paragraphs coherently, and to improve students’ ability to study in an English-medium institution. By the end of the course, students will be able to fulfill the requirements of the outcomes and objectives for this level. These include students being able to sustain a short (c.3 minute) conversation on familiar topics; make a 1-2 minute presentation on a prepared topic; comprehend spoken instructions; understand main ideas and specific details in short dialogues of 1-3 minutes duration; use reading strategies to comprehend texts of 350-450 words in a limited time; write a paragraph of 100 words with topic sentence, supporting details and concluding idea; edit and revise their own work and use a dictionary.

Speaking Skills

PF.S.1 

The student can provide personal information about himself, friends and family.

Listening Skills

PF.L.1

The student can understand verbal cues requesting information about himself, his family or friends; about familiar topics and everyday items.

PF.L.2

The student can recognize dates, numbers and familiar words, and unfamiliar words when spelled out.

PF.L.3

The student can understand context and gist (main ideas) in a dialogue of 1-3 minutes.

PF.L.4

The student can identify key words and specific details in a dialogue of 1-3 minutes.

PF.L.5

On completion of the level, students will be able to answer a variety of questions on a dialogue of 3-4 minutes.

Reading Skills

PF.R.1

The student can read an informative text of 400words in 45 minutes and answer questions on

  • context and gist (main ideas)
  • key words and specific details
  • headings and topic sentences
  • referents (pronouns)

PF.R.2

The student can read texts from a variety of sources and present the information orally (S1.2, S1.8), or in written form such as notes/sentences or a paragraph.(W1.1, W1.3, SS1.2)

Writing Skills

PF.W.1

The student can accurately form simple and compound sentences, questions and negations.

PF.W.2

The student can demonstrate use of capitals and punctuation (full stops, commas, question marks, and apostrophes.)

PF.W.3

The student can brainstorm and plan paragraphs, and edit and refine sentences/paragraphs corrected by the teacher.

PF.W.4

The student can produce a cohesive paragraph of around 100 words showing linear progression, with topic sentence, supporting details and concluding sentence.
