Department Profile

The Department of Accounting was established in 2004, alongside the founding of the University of Nizwa. Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to excellence in accounting education, research, and professional development. We take pride in our diverse and intellectually rich faculty comprising experienced academics and professionals from across the globe, bringing a global perspective to the learning environment.

The department offers a comprehensive range of academic programs including the Diploma, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degrees in Accounting, as well as a Ph.D. in Accounting under the umbrella of the Business Administration program. These programs are designed to equip students with 21st-century accounting competencies, combining technical knowledge with critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and sustainability-focused practices.

Our curriculum is continuously updated in alignment with international standards and professional bodies such as ACCA, ensuring relevance in today’s dynamic global market. We emphasize experiential learning by integrating research into the classroom through graduation projects, and by providing real-life work exposure through structured internships in accounting.

At the Department of Accounting, we are deeply committed to aligning our academic and professional vision with the nation’s development goals. We continuously strive to instill 21st-century accounting competencies in our students, merging technical knowledge with ethical decision-making, analytical skills, and a focus on sustainability. We take immense pride in our strong research culture, which has been recognized through multiple accolades, including the Best Research Project Award from The Research Council (TRC) Oman. Our faculty and students consistently contribute to high-impact research, reflecting our commitment to academic excellence and innovation.

Our graduates are well-prepared to pursue dynamic careers across banks, insurance firms, auditing and taxation companies, industrial enterprises, and government institutions. Many of our alumni hold prestigious positions in leading organizations such as KPMG, Oman Air, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Bank Muscat, UTAS, and the Ministry of Health, among others. To be an inspirational and innovative Accounting department having focus on application based education on core values of sustainable development, entrepreneurship and social responsibility that derives interest of students, faculty, employers, business and community stakeholders in exploring complex business issues.

Mission

To develop skilled, innovative, principled and ethical accountants and entrepreneurs with international perspective who are sensitive to the local community needs and values, through a career training system administered by professional, experienced and caring, faculty and administration.

Objectives

The Department of Accounting aims to:

  1. Cultivate comprehensive knowledge across core areas of accounting, integrating advanced technologies, analytical thinking, and practical skills to enable graduates to thrive in both local and global business environments.
  2. Develop Competent highly qualified Accounting Professionals equipped with expertise in accounting and auditing standards, capable of independently managing diverse accounting responsibilities with accuracy and confidence.
  3. Foster Research and Sustainability by promoting research that enhances professional knowledge and skills in accounting, addressing the evolving demands of sustainable development and contributing to the growth and prosperity of the community and the nation.
  4. Prepare Ethical and Impactful Professionals by training students for impactful roles as Accountants, Auditors, Management Accountants, and Financial Analysts, grounded in professionalism, transparency, accountability, and strong ethical values.
  5. Ensure Quality and Continuous Improvement by enhancing academic programs and departmental activities through systematic evaluation and effective implementation.
