Challenges in Translating cultural and civilizational terms in the Context of German and Arabic CulturesAs part of the ongoing summer school activities at the University of Jendouba in Tunisia, Dr. Khaireddin Abdulhadi, Head of the German Section, delivered a lecture on the translation of cultural and civilizational terms in the context of German and Arabic cultures. In this lecture, Dr. Abdulhadi explored the concept of "cultural and civilizational terms" in the field of translation and explained why translating these terms from German to Arabic presents numerous challenges and difficulties. He also discussed translation strategies related to these terms and how to effectively deal with them. At the end of the lecture, there was a wide-ranging discussion on the lecture's content. The attendees, including participating students from the summer school, engaged in translating various cultural and civilizational terms, including those related to administration and education. They discussed the challenges they face in this context, exchanging ideas and insights on how to strike a balance between preserving the original meaning and providing appropriate cultural guidance in translation to align with the familiar terms and concepts in the target language. This lecture was part of the activities of the summer school currently taking place at the University of Jendouba in Tunisia, with the participation of over 40 students from four universities: Bochum University and Gottingen University from Germany, Jendouba University from Tunisia, and Nizwa University. The summer school's activities will continue until October 15th, and it is organized with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the "Academic Dialogue with the Islamic World" project. |
