University of Nizwa Conference Explores the Future of Heritage, Tourism, and Museums

The second day of the International Conference on "Heritage, Tourism, and Culture: Renewed Visions for Civilizational Development" unfolded at the University of Nizwa, uniting researchers, experts, and stakeholders to delve into critical issues surrounding heritage conservation, tourism growth, and cultural sustainability.

Organized in partnership with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and the International Union of Historians, this event is a key highlight of the university’s 20th Cultural Season, running from February 3 to 5.

With 32 thought-provoking research papers presented across diverse sessions, scholars covered an array of topics, from historical identity and cultural sustainability to the economic potential of heritage-based tourism. Sessions explored the impact of traditional crafts, historical inscriptions, and architectural heritage in shaping national identity.

Notable discussions included:

  • "The Role of the Purple Economy in Strengthening National Identity in Tourism"
  • "Rock Engravings in Oman"
  • "Cultural Heritage Semiotics in Children’s Literature"

Researchers from Oman and abroad examined the ways in which heritage can drive economic development, preserve historical narratives, and cultivate a sustainable tourism sector.

The conference also offered interactive workshops on vital subjects such as heritage conservation, tourism investment, and the growing role of private museums in tourism development. Experts explored funding models for heritage projects, sustainable restoration practices, and strategies to promote adventure tourism intertwined with cultural heritage.

Speakers and participants, including government and private sector representatives, emphasized the need for stronger collaborations among governmental bodies, private enterprises, and civil society to advance Oman’s tourism and heritage sectors.

The conference drew a notable turnout, with academic researchers, entrepreneurs, and government officials engaged in discussions about utilizing Oman’s rich cultural heritage to fuel tourism and economic growth. The accompanying exhibition was a standout feature, offering visitors a glimpse into the depth of Oman’s history and cultural treasures, earning accolades from participants and visitors alike.
